Ello all!
I bought my first acoustic guitar the other day, and have been playing it ever since really (apart from time spent at work, obviously) and my fingers are killing me and are partically numb lol
Any tips on how to overcome this?
I’ve been reading up on chords etc, and would like to know of some great sites where I can learn how to play online (for free) lol
Any help is gratelyyyyy appreciated you guys, Thanks
I been teaching classical and acoustic for years and in the beginning I had the same problem. Your mistake is that your playing too many hours for a beginner. I know, I’ve seen many a hand Doctor for doing the same thing. You should start out at about twenty minutes a day, once in the morning and again at night. It takes months for obtain the callouses necessary to be able to play for hours at a time, not only the callouses but the muscles in your fingers and hands have to get use to the fingers being abused. Most importantly you have to play correctly, your fingers should be perpendicular to the strings, and your thumb should be in the middle of the back of the neck of your guitar. Most people don’t realize it but playing incorrectly can cause a lot of problems with pain. I know, like I said, I over did and spent lots of time at the hand Dr’s. I’m not a fan of the free sites, especially for lessons but here are a few ;

http://www.dirk.meineke.free.fr/
http://www.ultimateguitar.com/
http://www.cyberfret.com/
http://www.8notes.com/ (this site is great for beginners, it has a lot of information, example, you name the chord and they show you how to make it, and they also have a free on screen tuner, and lots of guitar information ) Good luck to you, and remember take it easy, I know I’ve been there done that and paid with pain lots of pain, guitar has to be approached in increaments, work twenty minutes a day, work up to a half hour, and then forty five minutes, and then an hour !!!! All my students do the same thing and I try to tell them that guitar is not something that you learn overnight, it will take a good year to be able to play for a couple of hours at a time without having to pay the price. So slow down, and I promise you that it will get a lot better, good luck !
